Garry's Mod is a sandbox mod for the Source Engine. Unlike normal games there aren't any predefined aims or goals. Players are given tools and are left to entertain themselves.
The player is in a world where objects can be created and destroyed on demand. Where people can be created and destroyed with the click of a mouse. A world made for him. A world he made.

[edit] Addons
These are some addons which might add some more junk to your PC's trunk, but they're definitely worth it. These are kind of the no fluff addons, because we only want no nonsense modifications. So, here's the list:
FIRST, some of the following mods will be marked with SVN. This marker means you need an SVN update tool like Tortoise SVN to effectively download these mods (you will need to restart after installing).
Some of you might be confused about SVN. You might think that SVN will bog down your computer by constantly connecting to a source or something incredibly devious. I assure you that it does not do any of that. Instead, it's just like downloading an addon from a website and then installing it in your addons folder, except the difference with SVN is that it connects to a directory on a website (that is constantly updated by the developer with new features and updates, fixes, etc.) that allows you to choose when you want to update. So, it won't bog your computer down, just use it, trust me.
[edit] PHX3 (SVN)
This is one of the most important addons to have. It is a MASSIVE addon (adds around 900 mb of content (JESUS)) which includes hundreds of new construction models to Garry's Mod along with some tools. If you want to check out the post, the link is here.

First, if you don't have Tortoise SVN installed already, install it (Tortoise SVN). If you do have it installed, go to your addons folder for Garry's Mod: \Steam\steamapps\%USERNAME%\garrysmod\garrysmod\addons (should look something like this)
Second, create a folder within addons called phx3.
Third, right click on the phx3 folder and in the context menu, click SVN Checkout.
Fourth, from the window that pops up, make the URL of repository
https://phoenix-storms.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/phoenix-storms
The Checkout Directory should be something along the lines of
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\%USERNAME%\garrysmod\garrysmod\addons\phx3
(change %USERNAME% and hard drive to whatever your computer needs it to be)
Finally, just press OK and let your computer download the information needed.

[edit] Wiremod (SVN)
Wiremod is the shit. I'm not sure how to explain it other then it lets you do a lot of stuff that you can't do in original Garry's Mod. These tutorials can help you understand more about this miracle addon. If you didn't download Phx (which is a mistake, make room for it), at least download Wiremod (it adds less than 200 mb to your hard drive).

OK, first go to your Garry's Mod folder (not addons)
\Steam\steamapps\%USERNAME%\garrysmod\garrysmod
From there, right click on addons and do an SVN Checkout.
Use https://svn.wiremod.com/svn/wiremod/ as the repository url and then use
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\%USERNAME%\garrysmod\garrysmod\addons
for the checkout directory (remember to alter for your computer).

This is a client-side tool for building contraptions with extreme precision, aligning objects for either aesthetic or functional perfection. To accomplish this task a grid is projected onto the object you are pointing at and by pressing the use-button your weapon will lock onto that point and allow you to place objects with pin-point accuracy. For all entities be them square, round or uneven this tool will bring you perfect precision. This is a remake of the classic AutoSnap with a multitude of improvements. We all loved AutoSnap, and since the development of it had almost come to a halt I decided it was time to bring it back to life, the code has been written from scratch.
